A wave of support for Crawfordsville native Luke Menard, 29, is building.
Menard, a 1997 Crawfordsville High School graduate, is one of 24 finalists on the popular television show American Idol.
"I think it's real exciting that we've got a local adult male who was born and raised here, went to school here and is in this position," local businessman Mike Grant said. Grant, owner of Arni's restaurant, said that Menard worked there when he was in high school.
"When you listen to him he talks about growing up here and gives credit to what a great place this is," Grant said. "It's my understanding that there were more 150,000 trying out for this and the fact that Luke made it is a great testament to this area."
Grant and others are trying to get the word out so that as many people as possible will watch Menard on the show and then call in and vote for him.
Debbie Lucas was going around Crawfordsville Friday taking flyers around to remind people to vote.
"Me and a friend are doing this because we are friends with the family, both neighbors and church related," Lucas said. "We know him personally and wish him luck."
Viewer votes help determine who advances and who is eliminated in the talent show.
The way the show works is simple. America gets to vote for their favorite contestant. As the season continues, contestants will be eliminated. It continues until there is only one contestant remaining, the season seven American Idol Winner. With your help, Luke could be that winner.
To help in this process, The Paper is running a full page "Vote for Luke" ad in today's paper on Page A5 in the hope that people will hang the sign in windows everywhere as a reminder.
Be sure to watch Luke on American Idol Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 8 p.m. on Fox.
