3/1/2008 2:30:00 AM Wanted: Nominees with character
By Sherry Legg-Young Purdue Extension Knowledge to Go
The Character Counts! in Montgomery County Board of Directors is requesting nominations for the fourth annual "Champion of Character Awards."
These awards are intended to honor the people and businesses of Montgomery County who live their daily lives representing the Six Pillars of Character.
Is there a lady at the drive-through who always starts your day with a friendly smile? Maybe it's the neighbor who has held his head high despite struggles he's overcome in his personal life? What about the business owner who allows employees time off for community service? Or, the volunteer coach who has never given up on her team despite the losing season?
These are the types of people these awards are intended to honor.
The Six Pillars of Character are: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Award nominees may encompass many of these characteristics or they may excel in one particular area.
They may be nominated for the many acts they perform everyday or for the one truly inspiring act that stands out above the rest.
Award categories have been expanded in order to encompass a greater variety of award winners. Categories include: Business/Industry Award, Champion of Character Award (six adults and six youth), Community Award, Educator of Character Award and Pursuing Victory with Honor Award.
Explanations for each award are as follows:
Business/Industry Award: A Business or Industry that has demonstrated the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, or Citizenship) in its professional culture and climate.
Champion of Character Award: An individual who has demonstrated the Six Pillars of Character, made difficult choices, acted with generosity and self sacrifice or performed community service (six adults and six youth will be honored).
Community Award: An organization that has developed an active community task force to support the Six Pillars of Character (example Scouts, Honor Society, Service Clubs, etc.)
Educator of Character Award: An educator who teaches and models the Six Pillars of Character and has impacted students through innovative character development and education (Possible examples: teacher, administrator, bus driver, secretary, etc.).
Pursuing Victory with Honor Award: An athlete or coach who demonstrates and models commitment to the Six Pillars of Character (one male and female athlete and one coach will be honored).
Nominations must be submitted or postmarked no later than Tuesday, April 1. Award winners will be honored at the Champions of Character Awards Breakfast on May 13 at the Boys' and Girls' Club of Montgomery County.
