It's that time of the year again - the time when mules and donkeys take center stage.
It's not very often that the general public pays much attention to these breeds of animals, but Saturday at the Athens Club, the 10th annual Midstates Mule and Donkey Association event is scheduled to take place.
The event is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and should run until approximately 3 p.m.
The organization has more than 400 members according to local member Brett Cating. According to Cating members live and hold shows in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky.
The event is not only a chance for local, and surrounding, mule and donkey owners to show off their animals, but it is also the major fund-raiser for scholarships which goes to member's children. Last year the group awarded one $500 and two $250 scholarships.
The event is open to the public. The money raised from the show comes from entries fees and money from sponsors. He said that many shows are lucky to break even after paying for the judge and buying trophies.
In the past the Montgomery County Mule Day raised between $300 and $400 for the scholarship fund.
Cating is hoping this year's event will be as successful as last year's when more than 50 animals participated. They had entries from Montgomery County, Noblesville, Indianapolis and Merrillville.
"The public is invited to come on out and bring your lawn chairs," Cating said. "It's a great way to enjoy a great day."
