8/3/2009 2:50:00 PM People queue at Lion's Club Ladoga Fish Fry
A line of people spanning a mile long and a big name band from a small town were the highlights of the 69th Annual Ladoga Fish Fry.
Steve Trent of Small Town, who headlined the Fish Fry's Friday entertainment, made several comments on the long line of people waiting to buy a fish sandwich from the Ladoga Lion's Club.
Sue Tandy, who waited in line well over 45 minutes, said the wait is worth it because of the good fish sandwiches and the Steve Trent Band.
Aaron Rhoads, Vice President of the Lion's Club, said, "We've got a longer line then we have ever had before. Small Town is helping to bring out the crowds this year, but we usually stay pretty busy on Fridays; you know, people just like to come hang out, eat and watch fireworks."
Sharol Horn has been going to the Fish Fry since she was a kid, but wanted to come back because she heard that Small Town drew a good crowd. The band did just that by playing its biggest hits and some other popular country covers.
Aside from having entertainment and food at the Fish Fry, there were many other fundraising booths, like Tri Kappa and the Ladoga Firefighters, who raised money for muscular dystrophy, and carnival rides set up for kids.
Megan Hester, a first time attendee of the Fish Fry, said, "There are a lot of kid's activities to do here and ... great entertainment for the adults."
Hester also said her fish sandwich was the best she ever had.
"The group that's frying the fish and the ladies who prepare it have been doing this for years, so now the process is perfected," said Steve Duncan, a Lion's Club member, "which allows the fellowship to come naturally."
"It's the heart of the community; we have a lot of repeat customers every night," said Rhoads.
Scott's Market, of Ladoga, provided the majority of the food made at the Fish Fry.
The Lion's Club members planned the Fish Fry, with the help of their families and wives.
Money to make the Fish Fry possible comes from food sales the previous year. Other profits go to the Ladoga Library Reading Program, two $500 scholarships at Southmont, youth softball and football leagues and other organizations and causes, such as cancer research, throughout the area.
