Southmont to honor alumni at Dollars for Scholars
The Paper


A trio of Southmont alumni will be honored during the Nov. 13 Dollars for Scholars Hall of Fame Banquet at the Crawfordsville Country Club.

The trio to be honored are: Rick Hallett, Scott Powers and Steve Trent.

The event will start off with hors' devours at 5:30 at the Crawfordsville Country Club on Friday, Nov. 13. The dinner will begin at dinner at 6:30.

Others to be honored that evening are current teachers Blake Zachary, Donna Sue Good Woodrow and Glenn Wiatt. Retired teachers to be honored will be: Judy Oxley, Virginian Harbison and Roger Clark. This year's Special honoree is attorney Terry Harris.

Tickets, which are $50, are available at Southmont High School Office by calling 866-0350, and ask for Mrs. Watson.

Here are the bios of three alumni to be honored:

Rick Hallett

Rick Hallett graduated from Southmont in 1986. For his undergraduate degree, he attended Indiana University (Bloomington), spending part of his junior year at the University of Seville (Spain). He graduated with a BA in English and Spanish in 1990.

After working for a year in Indianapolis, he moved to Baton Rouge. In 1994, he earned his MA in linguistics from Louisiana State University. Upon completion of his master's degree, he received a fellowship to teach English in Kaunas, Lithuania. In the fall of

1995, he started his doctoral work at the University of South Carolina (Columbia). He spent one year as a lecturer at Murray State University in Murray, Ky. In 2000, he completed his Ph.D. in linguistics and began a tenure-track position in the Department of Linguistics at Northeastern Illinois University (Chicago), where he is now a full professor.

This academic year he is a Fulbright Senior Scholar, researching the discourse of tourism. For his research, he and his wife, Jill, are traveling all around India until next summer.

Scott Powers

Scott Powers graduated as valedictorian of his 1981 Southmont Class. In 1985 he graduated from Wabash College and went on to receive his PhD from The University of Alabama in 1991 and in 1992 received certification in Clinical Psychology from the Ohio State Board of Psychology.

Currently he serves as the director of the Center for Child Behavior and Nutrition Research, co-director of the Headache Center and Staff Pediatric Psychologist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

His work has allowed him to perform research, write numerous publications and give presentations to groups with interest in pediatric behavioral medicine, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, obesity, headaches and nutrition dealing with children.

He is directly involved with supervision of Pediatric Psychology Postdoctoral Fellows and Pediatric Psychology Residents.

Steve Trent

Gary Steven Trent II attended Walnut Elementary school and graduated from Southmont in 1991. He was active in several extra-curricular activities including band, National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, German club and participated on the tennis, basketball and track teams.

Steve works as a Tech Service Representative in the book manufacturing facility of R.R. Donnelley in Crawfordsville. He also continues to pursue his lifelong dream to perform country music. He began playing the piano at age 5 and has been singing and playing ever since. Steve is now part of a regionally successful country band, Steve Trent and Small Town. He has had the opportunity to record two CDs and play in front of thousands of people along with opening shows for big stars such as Aaron Tippin, Mark Chestnut and Tracy Lawrence.

He is married to his lovely wife, Jennifer, and they have a 10-year old daughter, Gabrielle, who attends Ladoga Elementary.

Steve believes that life is full of challenges and he enjoys taking those challenges head on. He believes if you keep God first and have the support of family there is nothing he cannot achieve.
