LINDEN - North Montgomery boys swim coach Erin Yeager needs the Chargers' upperclassmen to come through for them this year.
They don't have much of a choice.
North Montgomery has just 15 swimmers on its roster, including only four underclassmen. Her seven seniors and four juniors have plenty on their shoulders.
That leaves Yeager with the challenge of putting some of her veteran swimmers in new events to help out the team.
"That means people will be swimming different events. I'll have to play with my line-up to see who swims what best," Yeager said. "I'll have to figure out what works best for us as a team."
North Montgomery opens its boys season at 6 p.m. today, when the Chargers travel to Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Western Boone for a co-ed meet.
North Montgomery placed third in last year's conference meet but lost plenty of swimmers to graduation, including Indiana High School Athletic Association State qualifier Eric Spencer. They'll need seniors Kevin Amstutz (100-yard butterfly and 200 individual medley), Todd Mellish (100 backstroke) and Wade Miller (100 breaststroke) to perform well in their main events while adjusting to some new secondary ones.
"The seniors trust me enough to let me do that. That's huge and will help us," Yeager said. "No matter where I put them at, I know they're going to give their best effort."
