NOBLESVILLE - Noblesville's veteran boys basketball team opened their season doing what veteran teams are supposed to do.
Playing a badly outmanned North Montgomery crew, the Millers romped to a 40-point victory, knocking off the Chargers by a 73-33 final count. The outcome was never in doubt as the Millers jolted away to a 16-4 first quarter advantage.
Noblesville (0-1) returned all five of its starters from last year's 13-9 team, and they got on North Montgomery (0-1) right from the start - handing the Chargers their worst loss in more than a year.
"We got after it pretty good on defense, and that it what you expect of a team with eight seniors," Noblesville coach Dave McCollough said. "We didn't shoot the ball real well, but we got enough easy shots to finish with a good percentage."
The Millers sank 30-of-60 field-goal attempts, but hit just 4-of-16 from three-point range, Add that shooting to a defense which forced 22 North Montgomery turnovers and a solid 37-14 Noblesville advantage on the boards.
Noblesville, with its depth, simply ran down North Montgomery. McCollough used 11 Millers in the game and all 11 scored.
Jake Yeary led Noblesville with, 20 points. Michael Deines with his 12 points and nine rebounds and Leland Brown finished had 10.
Senior Colin Maltsberger and junior Andrew Airey led North Montgomery with eight points apiece. Senior Jordan Galloway added seven and juniors Jake Thomas and Austin Krutzsch scored five apiece.
North Montgomery barely had more field goal attempts (37) than points.
Yeary scored eight points and Brown added six in the opening quarter, as Noblesville took complete charge.
"We know the look will be different when Warren Central comes in on Saturday," McCollough said. "It will be a completely different look and we'll find out more about this team. Our players are in good shape and we've got some athletic players on this team."
